Staff Craft Party: Recycled Gift Bows / by Melody

It's Christmastime at the library, and that means displays, programs, and take-and-make craft kits! This year's theme is Handmade Christmas, so my display included lots of cookbooks, craft books, gift ideas, and more. The take-and-make craft idea I decided to use is (of course) something I found on Pinterest, so I can take absolutely no creative credit for it. Last year I remember seeing this pin for creating gift bows out of recycled magazine strips, and thought that would be a great way to recycle the old magazines we discard at the library! The craft is incredibly simple and only required cutting out 4 different lengths of strips and printing some directions. I bagged up a bunch of kits and threw them artistically in a basket with a few pre-made recycled gift bows on it and people have been taking them!recycled gift bows My coworker and I had been wanting to plan a craft night for staff, so we decided to do one based around these simple gift bows. Not everyone is crafty or creatively confident, but these bows are easy enough for anyone. You just have to know how to use tape or staples. So we got together after work last night and made some colorful recycled bows over steaming bowls of turkey chili and a little white wine! The night was a success - good bonding time for staff and we now have a bunch of handmade recycled gift bows to adorn our Christmas packages! Hooray for DIY, and hooray for crafting!

If you want to learn how to make these bows yourself, check out Whole Living Magazine and follow their instructions - it's super easy once you get the hang of twisting the strips and stacking them together. I recommend using staples for assembling the bows, and tape for securing the twisted strips. Have fun, and show me what you make by tagging me @melmariadesigns on either Instagram or Twitter!
