Make your own wild bird shelter for your feathered friends! During the winter, non-migratory birds constantly have to eat to generate energy to keep warm. However, they can't eat at night, and sometimes will freeze to death if they don't have a warm place to sleep. These birds include chickadees, goldfinches, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, and tipmice. Make them a cozy place to sleep at night for easy and cheap!
You will need twig balls or little twig wreaths (available at any craft store), kitchen wire, and hay. Cut holes in the twig balls and stuff them with hay, making a little hollow for the birdies to sleep in. If you want to be a bit more crafty, take a twig wreath and create a shaped nesting spot with the wire. Stuff and weave with hay. If you can, attach a little twig perch for the exterior. Cut a few lengths of wire and make little hangers for your shelters.
