Now that I work at a library again, it's really easy (too easy, sometimes) for me to order books I've been wanting to read - it's a lot easier to search in the back end of the system for items in the catalog. Technical librarian speak taking over! Anyway, I've been ordering creative books that I've been wanting to read, and one of them is the A Beautiful Mess Photo Idea Book by Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman.
I knew I would love this book, and I did! I've been following their website for several years now and seen them change and grow, and I've always loved their style, projects, photography, and fashion. This book is chock-full of (you guessed it) photo ideas, and I can't wait to try more of them. As it is, I've only tried one, and I was really happy with the results.
There's a whole page devoted to homemade filters for your camera, from sunglasses lens to lace to Saran wrap smeared in Vaseline. I was intrigued with the Saran wrap technique, and decided to give it a try with my 50mm! I covered my lens with Saran, securing it with a hair elastic, and smeared a bunch of Vaseline over it, leaving a little hole in the center for the lens to focus through. Then I set my camera to monochrome and took a few photos. Tell me what you think! I adore the dark, moody feel of these photos - so unlike my usual style! I may need to change things up a bit and try this technique more often on some product photos, with color instead of black & white.
There are many more ideas in this book, from food photography to sun flare tips to fashion shoots. I encourage you to get your hands on a copy and expand your photography horizons! Have fun, and as always, share your creativity with me on social media by tagging me @melmariadesigns!
