I will be displaying artwork at Apotheca Flowers & Tea Shoppe as their artist of the month for August!
I chose the name of this artist show, Render, to illustrate my love of making. To render is to cause to be or become - to make. The act of creating an intricate piece from a single strand of thread is incredibly rewarding and personal. To weave, embroider, knit or crochet something wonderful is one of my favorite things to do in the world. What once was a pile of threads can become a thing of beauty, elaborate or simple, fancy or plain. Creating a piece from one of these techniques is special, especially because these techniques go back hundreds and hundreds of years. Can you imagine inventing such a technique? Learning to weave or embroider or knit or crochet for the first time? How special would that be? Can you imagine weaving a tapestry of an historical event or cloth for clothing, embroidering a piece of fancywork or linens for a wedding, knitting a warm sweater from the sheep you raised yourself, crocheting lace in Queen Victoria's court? Sometimes I think about these things while I'm working (but most of the time I'm listening to music or watching a BBC drama or mystery series - let's be real).
Starting August 5th, come in and take a peek - it's going to be a very special display. All pieces will be available for purchase, and there will be a simple weaving workshop later in the month. Stay tuned for more details! In the meantime, here are a few glimpses of the pieces to come. (Taken on my phone, sadly, but I find time is not on my side these days! Nicer photos will be coming.)
